Summer Drought or too much rain hurts the Cypress Trees

Have some years that begin with a very wet and cool climate. Wet, cold or cool climates are NOT ideal for cypress trees. in addition the perfect storm for the decline would be the following:

Too Much Saturation

At the feeder roots effects cypress trees in a very negative way! Further research has shown that the feeder roots Could become blocked with a fungal pathogen that will not allow the tree to process nutrients or water up the canopy through the branches. This normally ends up with Canker at the base of the main vascular and shoot branches.

This causes a secondary disease known as Seiridium Unicorn pathogen or Seiridium Canker. This can become more serious now that this allows the fungal to be an airborne pathogen. This will in most cases contaminate to other cypress trees in the vicinity of the area. In addition, drought can also trigger the disease.

Choosing the right cypress tree for treatment of Seiridium Canker

Depending on the severity of the case there is a protocol to follow. For trees that have more than 30% of foliage brown its recommended to remove. This will help keep them from transmitting the disease to other cypress trees.

Further more for cypress trees that have their tops affected by the tree disease. It's best to have them removed as well. For cypress trees that are showing decline and are less then 4 caliper inch it best to remove the don't necessarily do well with the treatment. Cypress trees over the 4 caliper inch do much better with the treatments.

Treatment of Seiridium Canker

  • Removal of brown branches is essential, bring them back all the way to the main stem.
  • Remove all old clipping foliage on the ground at the base of the tree.
  • Make sure to sanitize your equipment in between cuts on trimming.
  • First application of fungicide sprayed on foliage. Will need a second application in most cases later that year.
  • Microinjections deferent fungicide than the initial spray on canopy goes in the vascular system.
If the tree still shows signs of new browning repeat the whole process over again. Remember that a tree will never heal itself in the environment in which it got sick.

Diagnosing the reason for the Seiridium Canker out break is important for treatment success. If the root cause was drought make sure to start the tree on a water system. If the decline came from too much saturation it's important to cut back on the watering.

OUR REVIEWS

These guys were great. Very professional and knocked out a big job in just a few short hours. They clearly knew what they were doing and went above and behind to carefully analyze the health of each tree, and what was needed. As opposed to trimming and moving on. I highly recommend. They did my neighbor as well.

Very happy in my dealings with Henry and his crew. Henry came out on short notice to provide some recommendations on trimming and keeping one of my pecan trees healthy. His crew was able to come out a couple days later and were very professional and efficient. They even took the bigger limbs that were removed and cut them down for firewood and stacked the wood. Will definitely work with them again for future tree care.

Had just closed on the new house with beautiful landscape to discover my cypress trees dying and other trees on the property looking ill. Called two other arborist before I discovered Henry. Though there was no saving my already dying trees; the others were diagnosed, treated and saved. Henry was not only knowledgeable but also professional, friendly and extremely reasonable. It is almost shocking to find people like him these days. Highly recommended to all!
