Step #2: Proper watering
Remember that the most common mistake of all tree owners is not knowing how much water to use for your trees. For newly planted trees: they need lots of water try to water them for 5 minutes everyday with a regular hose at medium velocity on the knob. For trees in their first two years of growth: they also need lots of water for their root system to break through the soil. A good rule of thumb is 5 minutes five days a week at medium velocity on the hose. Try to spread the water from 2 - 4' around and away from the trunk in a circular motion. Older trees than two years: Once the tree has established its roots and you're not in a current drought condition. At this point, mother nature can give the tree all its moisture and watering can be done once every two weeks for about 10 minutes with medium velocity on a open hose. *This watering recommendation is for North Texas trees only* |
Step #3: Pruning your trees:
Why do you want to prune your tree? What goal do you have in mind? Light pruning is just fine anytime but live branch removal should be planned out first. Remember trees seal not heal and one bad cut can scar just like ones face. Winter pruning: Is about what everyone in the industry recommends. Wait until the coldest part of winter is over before pruning is best. When you can notice sap on the tree is normally a good time. This time is great because when spring rolls around it will sprout a good growth. Summer Pruning: Really should be done only for corrective proposes. Maybe you what to slow the growth of a few branches or reduce the amount of fruit it yields. In any case, make sure its well into summer before pruning after the growth season of the tree is over. Late July or August is what that is recommended for the most part. Try your best not to prune during spring its the growing season for trees. In addition, don't prune during the fall your tree will not heal correctly and there's a greater chance of fungus spreading through the tree. Remember what you cut will not grow back! |
